FAQs

What are the benefits of installing a retaining wall?

A retaining wall helps prevent soil erosion, stabilises slopes, and enhances your property’s visual appeal. It can also increase your property value by creating functional and attractive outdoor spaces.

How long will a retaining wall last?

Timber walls typically last 10 to 25 years, depending on treatment and maintenance. Concrete, stone, or engineered solutions can endure for several decades, offering longer-term value.

Do I need council consent for my retaining wall in Auckland?

You generally don’t need a building consent if the wall retains no more than 1.5 m of ground, supports no extra loads (like driveways or buildings), and includes suitable drainage. However, if the wall is taller than 1.5 m, supports additional loads, or is near significant features, you will need consent. Auckland Council provides an online tool to help you check whether you need a building or resource consent.

Would I need resource consent?

Even if a building consent isn't required, resource consent may still be necessary, especially if the wall affects earthworks, stormwater flow, environmentally sensitive zones, or is near public assets. If your wall is near a boundary, getting written neighbour approval (Deemed Permitted Boundary Activity) may streamline or replace the consent process.

How can Complete Retaining help with my retaining wall project?

We guide you through consent, design, and construction, tailored to Auckland’s council requirements. We ensure long-term stability with correct drainage, engineered supports, and local code compliance. We draw on deep familiarity with Auckland soils, slopes, and council standards, delivering durable, compliant, and aesthetically pleasing results.
